Amp-hours (Ah) are the battery's fuel tank: a 5Ah pack holds roughly two and a half times the energy of a 2Ah pack, so it runs longer between charges. Bigger packs are also heavier — the right answer is usually one of each, not the biggest number.

Runtime, weight, and the hidden third factor

Compact 1.5–2Ah packs use a single row of cells: light, great on a drill or impact driver overhead. 4–6Ah packs use two rows: double the runtime and — the under-appreciated part — they deliver current more comfortably, which high-draw tools like circular saws and grinders notice. That's why kit photos put big packs on saws and small packs on drivers.

The two-battery strategy

Most starter kits ship two batteries for a reason: one on the tool, one on the charger, zero downtime. A sensible setup on any platform is a compact pack for handheld work plus a 4–5Ah pack for hungry tools. Prices scale with Ah, so paying for a 6Ah you never drain is money that should have bought another tool.

A 5Ah DeWalt and a 5Ah Milwaukee hold similar energy but won't fit each other's tools. Compare Ah only within the platform you've chosen — and choose that platform first, with the picker or the full table.
